Chapter 6: Income, Subsidies and Employment in Irish Agriculture

By James O’Donovan

This chapter outlines how much the Irish food production system contributes to and costs the economy.  It explores in detail the Teagasc National Farm Surveys on the very poor economic status of many Irish farmers and the massive role of subsidies in family farm income.  The report also presents employment figures for animal agriculture and how jobs are distributed between farming and food processing.
